The ability of our hands to interact with the world around us defines us as human beings – in everyday life, at work, and in art and culture. We often only realise just how naturally we make use of their complex functions when they are impaired as a result of illness or no longer work as they usually do.

This video provides a vivid overview of the fascinating capabilities of our hands and the central role played by the brain in this, featuring expert commentary from Prof. Christian Grefkes-Hermann and Senior Consultant Dr. Caroline Tscherpel.

In Germany, around 270,000 people suffer a stroke every year, which often leads to a disability. In addition to conventional multi-disciplinary early rehabilitation, the University Hospital Frankfurt has recently started using a technique known as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), with the aim of ‘stimulating’ the brain to form new neural networks, thereby leading to improved rehabilitation outcomes.
