BG-REFINE: IMPROVING PATIENT-SPECIFIC PATHWAY ACTIVATION MODELS IN DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION

Computational models are increasingly used to estimate which neural pathways are engaged by deep brain stimulation (DBS). However, the accuracy of these models depends critically on how well individual anatomical variability is represented. BG-Refine develops methods to improve patient-specific pathway activation modelling by refining representations of basal ganglia fibre pathways using diffusion MRI.

The interdisciplinary project I02 focuses on methodological advances in pathway activation mapping and their application to individual DBS patients. By improving estimates of which pathways are activated by stimulation, BG-Refine seeks to provide a more accurate framework for studying the mechanisms underlying therapeutic and side effects of DBS.
